Download Maps

  1. First, search or pan the map area to find the area you want to download. Then tap on the layers button to choose the map type you'd like to download.

  2. Then choose the layer you would like to download from your list of map layers. Then tap "Download Maps".

  3. Next, drag your finger diagonally along the screen to choose the area you would like to download.  Gaia GPS will only download the selected area of the currently visible map.

  4. Then, make sure to adjust your max zoom levels. Note: the more zoom you allow, the more detail you will be able to see of the downloaded map, but the amount of space the map will take up on your device also increases.

  5. Finally, choose a name for your saved map. This will help you find your map when it is stored under the list of saved maps on the Saved Screen.

You can check on the progress of your saved map download by pressing on the blue progress square on on your main map screen.

When you download additional maps, your existing map download regions will display as colored boxes. Red indicates a region containing the same layer you're currently downloading. Yellow indicates a region where you've downloaded a different map layer.

How do you know you are looking at a downloaded map and not one that comes from a cell connection?

    Hi,

Here is how you can verify that you're viewing a downloaded map:

    1. Put your device in airplane mode

    2. Open the app and go to settings > clear cache

    3. Go to your saved map and tap 'Load in Main Map'

Also note, that if you go to your saved map and see the option to 'Resume Download', the map has not finished saving. Tap there with airplane mode turned off to resume and finish the download.

    Hi Bill,

You can tap 'resume' from the downloads screen to finish up any lingering downloads.

Alternatively, you can go to Gaia GPS > Menu > Maps to find and delete any in-progress downloads that you no longer want.

I meant the list that appears while downloads are in progress:

    Bill,

Once all the downloads currently in progress are finished, you can press 'done' and that screen will clear itself out.

    Hi,

I am planning a big Patagonia trek and want to have a large route available offline on my phone. I've noticed that some sections of the map that I haven't yet downloaded ARE actually available offline already. Does the app automatically save areas that I looked at whilst online without me actually going through the download process? If so is it similar to google maps where these will only be visible offline for a certain time period?

    Thanks!

    Hi Charlie,

What you are seeing are cached map tiles. The app caches your last 100,000 viewed map tiles for smooth scrolling, but I don't suggest relying on these for offline navigation as the cache could be cleared without warning.
