What is the Difference Between A Track and A Route?

In Gaia GPS, you will find imported and recorded trails filed into two categories: Tracks and Routes.

  • Routes are pre-defined and created manually using software like the route creation tool at gaiagps.com/map.
  • Tracks are breadcrumb trails, made up of GPS points collected while physically following a trail.

You can use both tracks and routes in the app similarly, including using the Guide Me feature (iOS/Android).

One difference you'll notice is that routes can be edited to add or remove location points, while tracks can be trimmed at the start or finish.
